Pompeii, Herculaneum and Campania

We have always had an interest in Roman life and Pompeii has been on our list of places to visit for some while. So today we are off on an archaeological tour for a week with a travel company called Andante Travels. They say that they are a tour company run by archaeologists and certainly one of our reasons for booking with them is that we are accompanied during the week by a professional archaeologist who will teach us about the sites and what we are seeing. There is also a tour manager accompanying us who is there to sort out all of the things like the hotel, entry to sites etc and the hotel we will be staying at for the week has good reviews. Andante themselves seem to have universally good reviews – anyway we will see how the week turns out.

Our objective is to learn about Roman life and buildings plus a few associated cultures and of course visit Pompeii, Herculaneum and climb Vesuvius.

We have a morning flight from Gatwick and so as is usual for us, we are staying the night at a hotel near the airport so that we do not have to experience the temperamental pleasures of the M25 on a Monday morning rush hour.

post travel note:

The Ibis at Gatwick was ok (nothing more), the flight out was bearable and those we are travelling with seem like they will be good fun and are all of a similar age and nature to ourselves.

The coach journey from Naples airport to the Hotel Scapoliatello took about 90 minutes, the weather in Italy

seems to be nicely warm and we are all set for an interesting week.
